1) Figure your
budget:
By
knowing this the designer will be to show you what is within your budget (oak is
less expensive than cherry, standard construction is less expensive than
upgrade, Laminate counter tops are less expensive than Quartz tops,
etc…).
2)
Hiring
a contractor:
Marling Homeworks has a list of contractors that we will recommend, but we do not have contractors that work directly for us.
Check references
Make
sure that the contractor is insured and everything is in
writing.
If you are unsure of the price get a couple bids.
3)
Starting
the design process:
When
designing your new kitchen / Bath
ask yourself some questions
1)
What
do and don’t you like about your existing kitchen (storage, layout, work
space, etc…)?
2)
What
do your want out of your new design (an island, specialty cabinets,
etc…)?
Think
about the different areas in your kitchen / bath that you may want to add: -
Prep / cooking areas
-
Planning area
-
Cleanup area
-
Dish / pots & pan storage
-
Food storage
3)
What
type of cabinet do you want (contemporary, arts and crafts, traditional,
laminate, wood)?
4)
Are
you going to want new appliances, and if so are they going to be different
sizes?
5)
What
type of counter tops do you want (laminate, solid surface, granite,
quartz)?
It
is always helpful to gather design information from magazines, friends, and
family. This will help the designer
get a better idea of what you are looking for in your new kitchen /
bath.
There
is also a sheet added that list some “Bells and Whistles” that you may want to
consider in your cabinets, this should be filled out to also help the designer
with your project.

Measuring your existing kitchen / bathroom:
At
the first meeting with a designer we will ask you to bring in the measurements
of your kitchen / bath. These do
not have to be perfect, they will be use to layout your design and if you
proceed with the remodel and purchase the cabinets / counter tops from Marling
Homeworks we will come out to your residence and confirm all measurements before
ordering any cabinets / counter tops.
On
the following page there is an example diagram of what we need you to
dimension. The last page of this
packet is an extra page so that you are able to draw your kitchen / bath with
your dimensions.
Make
sure you note where:
- Any openings
are.
- Electrical outlets are
located
- Plumbing is located (including sink
size)
-
Appliance size and location (if they are not
able
to be moved)
